About the Namibian Oryx
The oryx or gemsbok is superbly adapted to Namibia's harsh environment. They occur throughout much of the country and can survive in extremely dry areas where many other antelope struggle.
Adult oryx stand approximately 1.2 metres at the shoulder, with mature bulls capable of weighing around 240 kg. Both males and females carry impressive horns. Bulls generally have heavier, thicker horn bases, while females often have longer and more slender horns.
Oryx are primarily grazers but can switch to browsing when grass becomes scarce. Their ability to obtain moisture from their food allows them to survive for long periods without relying on regular access to drinking water.

Few animals represent Namibia better than the oryx. Seeing a gemsbok standing against Namibia's open plains is one of Africa's classic sights—and hunting one on foot makes the experience even more memorable.
